Why Better Sleep Starts the
Moment You Wake Up

How just 10 minutes of morning sunlight can support your energy, mood and sleep.

Most of us think about sleep when our head finally hits the pillow.

We dim the lights, put our phones away (or at least try to), and hope for a good night's sleep.

But according to growing research, one of the most important things you can do for your sleep actually happens within the first hour of waking.

Simply stepping outside into natural morning light.

It's one of the simplest daily rituals we encourage at Living Valley, and one our CEO, Giselle Martin, has followed for years.

Why morning light matters

Morning sunlight helps regulate your circadian rhythm, your body's internal clock.

This internal clock influences far more than just when you feel sleepy. It plays an important role in regulating your energy levels, mood, hormone production, metabolism and the quality of your sleep.

When natural light enters your eyes early in the day, it signals to your brain that it's time to be awake. This helps suppress melatonin, the hormone responsible for making you feel sleepy, while supporting your body's natural release of cortisol at the right time of day.

Although cortisol often gets a bad reputation, it's an essential hormone that helps you wake up feeling alert and energised. Morning light helps reinforce this natural rhythm so your body knows when it's time to be awake, and later, when it's time to wind down.

Better mornings often lead to better nights

One of the biggest misconceptions is that improving your sleep starts at bedtime.

In reality, many sleep experts suggest it starts much earlier.

Regular morning light exposure has been associated with:

Improved sleep quality

Better daytime energy

Improved mood

A more consistent sleep-wake cycle

Support for healthy hormone regulation

It's one of the simplest habits to introduce into your routine, yet one of the most overlooked.

It doesn't need to be complicated

You don't need to meditate.

You don't need a sunrise hike.

You don't even need perfect weather.

Simply spend 10 to 15 minutes outdoors shortly after waking.

Take your morning coffee outside, enjoy breakfast on the patio, walk the dog, water the garden or simply sit quietly with a glass of water.

Natural daylight is significantly brighter than indoor lighting, even on an overcast day, making it incredibly effective at helping your body recognise the start of a new day.

A simple ritual worth trying

Every morning, Giselle takes her morning tonic outside and spends a few quiet moments in the sunshine before the day begins.

It's not about following another wellness trend or creating the perfect morning routine.

It's simply about giving your body one of the things it was designed to receive.

Sometimes, the smallest daily habits can have the biggest impact.
