Living longer is one thing. Feeling well as we age is another.
There’s a lot of talk about longevity at the moment. Supplements, new treatments, wearable technology and endless advice about what we should (and shouldn’t) be doing.
But when it comes to looking after our health as we get older, it’s often the everyday habits that deserve the most attention.
Here are five worth focusing on, along with a few simple things you can try at home.
Walking, swimming, gardening, Pilates, strength training. It all counts.
Regular movement helps keep our hearts healthy, muscles strong and bodies mobile. As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes particularly important for balance and independence.
Something to try: Ask yourself, what’s one small way I could move more every day? Perhaps it’s a 15-minute walk after lunch, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or doing a few gentle stretches while the kettle boils.
And don’t forget to include some strength-building activities during the week.
We all know how different we feel after a poor night’s sleep.
Sleep plays an important role in memory, mood and physical recovery. Most adults need around 7–9 hours, but getting into a consistent sleep routine is just as important.
Something to try: Avoid eating a large, heavy meal right before bed. Lying down on a full stomach can contribute to reflux and discomfort, making it harder to settle.
At Living Valley, our evening meals often include lighter options such as nourishing soups and broths. It’s one way we encourage a gentle wind-down at the end of the day.
You don’t have to eat soup every evening, of course! Simply allowing a little time between dinner and bedtime can be a good place to start.
Healthy eating doesn’t need to be complicated.
Plenty of colourful vegetables, seasonal fruit, wholegrains, good-quality protein and fibre-rich foods provide nutrients that help keep our bodies functioning well.
Protein becomes particularly important for maintaining muscle as we age, while fibre supports digestive health.
Something to try: Instead of thinking about what you need to cut out, think about what you could add. An extra handful of greens at lunch, some lentils in your soup or a piece of seasonal fruit with breakfast.
Small additions can make a difference over time.
Between work, family, commitments and everything else, it’s easy to go through the day without much time to ourselves.
But ongoing stress can affect our sleep, mood and physical health.
Something to try: Create a small pocket of time in your day where you’re not doing anything for anyone else. It could be 10 minutes outside with your morning tea, a walk without your phone or simply sitting quietly before starting your day.
The important part? Don’t turn it into another task you feel you have to get right.
This one doesn’t always get as much attention as diet and exercise, but our relationships and sense of connection are an important part of healthy ageing.
Spending time with friends and family, maintaining hobbies and learning something new can support our emotional and cognitive wellbeing.
Something to try: Think of someone you’ve been meaning to catch up with and make a plan. Or try an activity you’ve always been curious about, whether it’s a local walking group, a cooking class or volunteering.
Sometimes looking after your health is as simple as making time for the people and activities you enjoy.
You don’t need to overhaul your life to start looking after your future health.
Start with one thing. Something small enough that you can realistically keep doing it.
And remember, it’s never too late to make your health a priority.
At Living Valley, we see how valuable it can be to step away from everyday routines and spend some time focusing on yourself.
